If Possible a Peace with the Past
immersive installation by Ralitza Toneva
To what extent is the memory that serves to define our identity illusory - a controlled re-animation of fragments? Is the process of actualization of memory real and palpable, or is just illusionistic short-term relief? How do we separate the virtual from the real, in terms or representation, how banal is the convenience of illusion?
The installation thematically revolves around cognitive ambivalence and memory as a fundamental building unit of reality.

Description
Projection of archival photos of people onto water mist. The images get animated by the movement of the tiny water drops and faces from the past come to life. The light is refracted through the miniature prisms of the water and when passing through the screen, the picture gets decomposed. An illusion of volume and a primitive misty hologram are created. When the spectator passes through the screen, the water mist touches the bare skin and creates a physical sensation of shivers and cooling that accompanies the illusion of touching the image.
*The installation has a maximum impact in the hot period of the year due to its sensory effect.
